Nicholas Martyn and wife Margaret M.S. III J pid 1595/96
London workshop Effigies of Nicholas Martyn, 1595, in armor, and his wife Margaret, with three sons and seven daughters, all kneeling. Achievement and inscription in nine lines of English. Mural at the back of an altar tomb surmounted by a canopy cin the south chapel, the Chapel of St. Magdalene. This brass commemorating Nicholas Martyn consists of four separate plates. ...To the right of the achievement kneels Margaret Wadham Martyn before a prayer desk, with her seven daughters behind her, all similarly dressed....The achievement, and a rectangular plate between these two major figures, displays a shield with the Martyn arms (Argent two bars Gules) impaling thoseof Wadham (Gules, a chevron between three roses Argent). ... Beneath the achievement and the figures is a separate plate with an inscription of nine lines in English in Roman capitals:
Here lyeth the body of Nicholas Marton Esqvire;
Who departed this life & Slept vth his fathers
Ye 23 day of March An° 1595
& left behind to inherit his lands
IIV daughters co heirs Elizabeth Frances Jane & Anne,
whose sovle assvredly doth rest,
with Abraham Isaeck and Jacob

Nicholas Martyn married Margaret, the daughter of John Wadham of Merifield, Somerset, whose brother Nicholas Wadham of Ilminster, Somerset (q.v.), founded Wadham College, Oxford. Unfortunately, Nicholas was the last of the Martyns, for his three sons died...
